Salem State Stops Fitchburg State, 3-1

McCready nets markers in Falcons first setback of the season

SALEM, Mass. (November 20, 2010) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Salem State University, 3-1 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

KEVIN MCCREADY

Senior Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC) notched the lone goal for Fitchburg State and classmate Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) stopped 27 shots in the net, but the Falcons fell victim from two Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, N.J./UMass Dartmouth) goals as Salem State improved to 4-0-0 on the season.

Salem State got on the board first as Capodanno connected for his first goal of the game at the 17:44 mark of the first period. Capodanno teamed up with Matt Genovese (Hingham, Mass./South Shore Kings) and Kyle Phelan (Barnstable, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) late in the first period to give the Vikings an early 1-0 edge.

In the second period, Fitchburg State quickly knotted the score as McCready found the back of the net just 1:47 into the frame. McCready connected for his third goal of the season using assists from junior Thomas McAleer (East Islip, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and sophomore Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree), but Salem State responded late in the period, as Capodanno put the Vikings up for good at the 18:11 mark.

Salem State added an insurance marker in the third period, as Nick Lampson (Groton, Mass./Jersey Hitmen) hit home for his third goal of the season, but Fitchburg State did not go quietly, mustering 15 shots throughout the period.

The Falcons held a slim 34-30 advantage in targets, while neither team converted on the 16 combined power-plays. Salem State goaltender James Lacour (Silver Springs, Md./Walpole Stars) finished with 33 saves in the contest, including a perfect 15-of-15 third period, while Vorse heralded his third complete game of the season for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (3-1-0, 1-1-0 MASCAC) returns to action of the Thanksgiving break as it travels to Westfield State University on December 2nd. Salem State (4-0-0, 2-0-0 MASCAC) will travel to UMass Dartmouth next Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
