Hurd posts four points as Corsairs claim MASCAC regular season crown
FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 26, 2011) – UMass Dartmouth freshman Ryan Hurd (Mound, Minn./Rochester Ice Hawks) registered four points this evening as the Corsairs defeated the Fitchburg State University Falcons, 4-1 in MASCAC ice hockey action.
With the victory, UMass Dartmouth claims the 2010-11 MASCAC regular season crown and earns a first round bye in next week’s MASCAC tournament. Fitchburg State (15-9-1, 9-8-1 MASCAC), who earns the fourth seed in the MASCAC tournament, will host a quarterfinal match next Tuesday as it squares off against fifth-seeded Worcester State starting at 7:30 p.m.
UMass Dartmouth got on the board first and continued to cruise after Hurd’s first period marker gave the Corsairs an early advantage at the 11:07 mark. The Corsairs added another marker in the second period with a goal from sophomore Nick Marquis (Londonderry, N.H./Valley Jr. Warriors), before taking a 3-0 margin early in the third period off the stick of classmate Dan Dempsey (Norwell, Mass./Lebanon Valley College).
Fitchburg State showed some life down the stretch, breaking its scoring silence with junior Thomas McAleer’s (East Islip, N.Y./New York Bobcats) ninth goal of the season at the 18:58 mark, but UMass Dartmouth sealed the contest with an empty net goal from senior Billy Manning (Stoughton, Mass./Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) with just under a minute remaining in the game.
Both teams skated strong but UMass Dartmouth took advantage of two power-play markers and a 40-33 advantage in shots to post its league-leading 13th victory of the season. Senior Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) totaled 36 saves in net for the Falcons, while veteran Collin Tracy (Medford, Mass./Medford) stopped 32 shots for the Corsairs.
