Falcons capture second consecutive ICFCU Shootout crown

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 13, 2010) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team captured its second consecutive IC Federal Credit Union Shootout this afternoon, defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-3 in the Wallace Civic Center at Fitchburg State University.

KRIS THRELKELD

The Falcons defended their 2009 crown using a two point effort from junior Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects). Threlkeld paced the Falcons with two markers throughout the contest, while sophomore Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) added a pair of helpers. Senior captain Chris Riggs (Sewell, N.J./Fort Vancouver Pioneers) was also strong with one score and one dish in the game, while Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif./Wichita Falls) added two points on one goal and one assist for the Leopards.

For the second straight night, Fitchburg State came out blazing, taking a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Junior Thomas McAleer (East Islip, N.Y./New York Bobcats) put the Falcons on the board early with his second score of the season just 3:54 into the contest, while Threlkeld followed suit just ten minutes later, connecting for his first score of the season off a Billy Pescosolido (Framingham, Mass./Walpole Express) and Erik Trahan (Manville, R.I./Winchendon School) assist.

In the second period, Wentworth nibbled back, cutting the Falcons lead to only one (3-2) with two Mike Paglino (Grosse Point Shores, Mich./Bay State) goals. The Falcons touched first, extending their lead to 3-0 with Threlkeld's second tally of the contest, but the Leopards respond with back-to-back Paglino markers over a 0:57 span for a one goal deficit at the break.

In the final frame, Fitchburg State secured its victory early as senior Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC) posted the eventual game-winner at 9:11 of the period. McCready took a feed from Riggs and sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) to notch his second goal of the season. Riggs padded the Falcons lead with his first goal of the season, before Jameson capped the game's scoring with a power-play score at 13:28.

Throughout the contest, both teams battled for possession with Wentworth holding a slim 40-34 margin in shots. Senior Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) earned the victory in net for the Falcons, totaling 37 saves in the complete game effort, while sophomore Mike Jarobe (Grosse Point Park, Mich../Marquette) stopped 29 shots for the Leopards.

Fitchburg State (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Thursday as it hosts Framingham State at 7 p.m. Wentworth (1-2-1, 0-0-1 ECAC NE) will travel to Johnson and Wales on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
