Fitchburg State Ices Worcester State, 5-2

Riggs and Lawler combine for four points in Falcons MASCAC win

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 19, 2011) – Fitchburg State senior Chris Riggs (Sewell, N.J./Fort Vancouver Pioneers) and sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) combined for four points to help lead the Falcons to a 5-2 triumph over Worcester State in MASCAC action this evening.

The Falcons got on the board first at the end of the opening period as junior Bryan Canter (Anchorage, AK/Helena Bighorns) notched the tally at 18:34. The Lancers would respond 44 seconds later and knot the score as junior John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) scored his team-leading 14th marker of the season.

Coming out of the locker room, Fitchburg State seized the momentum of the contest when third-year Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects) and Riggs scored exactly three minutes apart in the early-goings of the second period. Worcester State cut into the lead midway through the final period as freshman Brendan Galley (Colorado Springs, Col.) lit up the siren at 11:42 to make the score 3-2.

Lawler, however, gave the Falcons the advantage they would need to earn the victory as he scored their last two goals in a span of nine seconds. The second-year Falcon scored in the waning moments of the game with the final marker coming in the form of an empty netter.

Junior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) improved his overall record to 10-3-0 with 33 saves in the contest, while Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) collected 41 stops in the setback.

Fitchburg State (14-8-1, 8-7-1 MASCAC) will host Plymouth State on Thursday at 7 p.m. Worcester State (9-11-3, 5-10-1) entertains Westfield State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
