Fitchburg State Draws Framingham State, 1-1 (OT)

Lawler scores lone goal in Falcons MASCAC stalemate

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (November 29, 2011) – The Fitchburg State University ice hockey team battled Framingham State University to a 1-1 draw this evening in MASCAC men's ice hockey action at Framingham's Loring Arena.

After a scoreless first period that saw the Falcons outshoot the Rams 15-7, Framingham State's offense came out firing in the second. Just over five minutes into the period, the Rams had an opportunity to break the scoreless tie as they fired a series of shots on net, but Fitchburg State goaltender Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) turned away the Rams first two shots before the net came off ending the Rams scoring chance.

The Falcons offense responded and finally connected for the game's first goal with 2:15 remaining in the second as sophomore Shawn Bradley (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) sent the puck up the ice to junior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies). Lawler then found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Fitchburg State would take the 1-0 lead into the second intermission and hold the lead until midway through the third.  With 10:33 remaining in regulation sophomore forward Daniel Miressi (Monroe, Conn.) hit junior Ben Pacific (Marlboro, Mass.) with a pass and Pacific found sophomore Bo Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) on the wing.  Driscoll fired a shot under the crossbar into the net tying the game at 1-1.

The Rams appeared to score what would have been the game winner with 1:00 remaining in regulation, but the goal was waved off and the game would go to overtime. In the extra session, both teams had one shot on goal, but neither was able to find the back of the net.  The Rams best chance to score came with less than a minute remaining when Miressi had the puck alone on the wing and fired a shot that went just wide of the goal.

The Falcons outshot the Rams 45-36 in the game but Framingham State sophomore goaltender Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, Calfi.) had an outstanding game making 44 saves in the draw. Leiser finished with 35 for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (2-4-1, 1-1-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts UMass Dartmouth at 4 p.m. Framingham State (0-4-1, 0-2-1 MASCAC) will visit Worcester State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
