Fitchburg State Explodes Past Framingham State, 6-2

Falcons used balanced attack en route to seventh MASCAC victory

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (February 2, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team used five second period goals to propel itself to a 6-2 victory this evening, defeating Framingham State in MASCAC  action at Loring Arena.

Junior forward Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./UMass Lowell) was one of four Falcons to collect three points in the game. Caveney tallied a pair of power play goals in the second period and picked up a helper on the game winner, while senior Thomas McAleer (Long Island, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and junior Cory Callen (Annadale, N.J./Oswego State) also picked up three points on a goal and two assists apiece. Junior Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) dished out three helpers in the contest for his three points.

The Rams were led by sophomore forward Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.) who tallied both Ram goals including a power play tally late in the game, while classmate Daniel Miressi (Monroe, Conn.) assisted on each tally by Ward.

Callen gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead after the first period with his lone marker in the game at the 8:33 mark.

The Falcons offense exploded for five goals in the second with four coming on the power play including the game-winner from junior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) just over six minutes into the period. Ward cut the Falcons lead to 4-1 with his first of the game and third of the season at 15:25 of the second before the Falcons added two more to push the lead to 6-1 after two.

Ward tallied his fourth of the season eight minutes into the third off assists from Miressi and sophomore defenseman Bo Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) to reach the final differential.

The Rams outshot the Falcons 37-31 in the game but were penalized 11 times leading to the Falcons converting four of five power plays into scores while the Rams capitalized on just one of four opportunities with the man advantage. 

Senior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) picked up the win between the pipes making 29 saves, while sophomore Dale Adams (Gardner, Mass.) picked up the loss making 24 saves in two periods of work.  Senior Todd Rowley (Billerica, Mass.) worked a scoreless third period for the Rams making seven saves.

Fitchburg State (8-9-2, 7-5-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Salem State at 2 p.m. Framingham State (3-12-3, 2-9-2 MASCAC) will visit Plymouth State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
