Plymouth State Slips One Past Fitchburg State, 4-3

Leiser stops 26 shots in Falcons MASCAC heart-breaker

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (December 10, 2011) – Junior Kyle Greco (Hillside, Ill.) scored two goals, including a power play marker with three seconds remaining in regulation play Saturday night, giving Plymouth State University a 4-3 victory over Fitchburg State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) game at Hanaway Rink.

Fitchburg State had tied the game at 3-3 in the first minute of the third period, and the game appeared headed to overtime, but Greco collected the puck near the right post and shot it over the goalie's shoulder for the game-winner at 19:57. The Panthers complete the semester in first place in the MASCAC, reaching the break with an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark.  Fitchburg State winds up the semester at 3-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the MASCAC.

The Falcons jumped on the board in the first minute of the game when junior Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) deflected a shot from the point up over the goalie's shoulder right under the cross bar.  PSU answered with a pair of goals before the end of the frame, freshman Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) scoring his first collegiate goal at 12:38 and Greco giving PSU the lead with his first of the game at 16:54.

Fitchburg State tied the game at 2-2 midway through the second period when junior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) picked up a loose puck near the top of the left circle and fired a shot to the top right corner of the goal for an unassisted score.  PSU junior Kyle Weiland (Hamden, Maine) put PSU back ahead with 2:18 remaining in the second, but senior Thomas McAleer (Long Island, N.Y./New York Bobcats) tied the game at 3-3 just 35 seconds into the third period.

PSU finished with a slim 30-26 lead in shots on goal.  PSU junior Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) earned the victory, making 23 saves, while junior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) stopped 26 shots for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (3-6-1, 2-3-1 MASCAC) will be back in action after the break as it participates in the Norwich University Tournament on January 6th and 7th. Plymouth State (8-2-0, 5-1-0 MASCAC) will host Wentworth in a two-game set on Jan. 7-8.
