Fitchburg State Doubles Down UMass Dartmouth, 4-2

Callen nets a pair in Falcons key MASCAC victory

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (January 21, 2012) – Junior forward Cory Callen (Annandale, NJ/Oswego State) scored the game-winning goal at 3:30 of the middle period to lift the Fitchburg State ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over MASCAC rival UMass Dartmouth this evening.

Junior defenseman Matt Correia (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) put the Corsairs on the board first at 8:57 of the opening period, redirecting a shot off the stick of senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr Bulldogs) but Fitchburg State answered immediately scoring 11 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1.

Falcons senior forward Thomas McAleer (East Islip, NY/New York Bobcats) put the puck past Corsair junior goalie Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) to knot the score, using a Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, MA/New England Jr Huskies) feed on the play.

Fitchburg State tacked on another goal just 27 seconds later as freshman forward Sean Loebs (Cresskill, NJ/Connecticut Jr Wolfpack) laced a one-timer from the top of the circle past Williams at 9:35. Freshman Carlo DiPiazza (Ridgewood, NJ/Connecticut Jr Wolfpack) assisted on the play, making it a 2-1 Falcon lead before Callen hit home for a two-goal advantage.

Both teams traded power play goals in the final period  to conclude the scoring. The Corsairs cut the lead to 3-2 at 3:18 as Marquis scored off a Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) and Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AtJHL) helper, but Fitchburg State countered with Callen's second goal of the game.

In the contest, the Corsairs outshot the Falcons, 35-34 as Williams made 30 saves for the host. Sophomore Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) earned the victory for Fitchburg State with 33 saves between the pipes.

Fitchburg State (6-8-2, 5-4-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Thursday as it hosts Westfield State at 7 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (10-5-1, 6-3-1) will host Plymouth State next Thursday evening as well.
