Wentworth Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 2-0

Leopards claim 2011-12 ICFCU Shootout crown

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 12, 2011) – The Wentworth ice hockey team claimed the 2011-12 IC Federal Credit Union Shootout crown, blanking Fitchburg State University 2-0 in championship action this afternoon.

With the victory, Wentworth improves to 2-1-0 on the season (0-0-0 ECAC NE), while Fitchburg State falls to 1-2-0 overall and 0-0-0 in the MASCAC.

After a scoreless first period of play, Wentworth broke the game's scoring silence early in the second period as freshman Kyle Crowe (Galloway, N.J./St. Louis) connected for his second goal of the season just 1:38 into the period. Crowe scored a power play tally, using an assist from senior forward Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif./Wichita Falls) to give the Leopards the only goal they would need.

In the third, the Leopards doubled their lead with a goal from senior Casey Shade (Anchorage, AK/Trail). Shade finished his third goal of the season, taking a feed from junior Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif./St. Louis) just 0:30 into the period.

The Wentworth defense was tenacious throughout the contest, limiting Fitchburg State to only 17 shots all game. The Leopards boasted a 29-17 margin in targets, while junior goaltender Mike Jarobe (Grosse Point Park, Mich./Marquette) played strong in net for the Leopards. Jarobe earned his first shutout of the season with 17 stops, while counterpart Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) stopped 27 shots for the Falcons.

Shade, Crowe and Jarobe were all named to the All-Tournament team for their outstanding play in the shootout, while Shade also collected Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Also named to the All-Tournament team were Dino Federico (Franklin Pierce), John Humphrey (Southern N.H.), and Thomas McAleer (Fitchburg State).

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Salem State at 7 p.m. Wentworth will also be on the road on Thursday as it visit Western New England College at 7:15 p.m.
