Fitchburg State Rallies Past Westfield State, 5-4

Caveney's last second goal leads Falcons over Owls

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 26, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team used a four goal third period to down the Owls of Westfield State in a 5-4 win, registering another MASCAC conference victory.

Westfield State got on the board first, striking midway through the first period as junior Jason Nelson (Raleigh, N.C./Springfield Jr. Falcons) netted a power-play goal at the 13:47 mark. Back-to-back goals in the second period from Lucas Romero (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Pembroke) and Tyler Prendergast (Richmond Hill, ON /Whitby Fury) gave the Owls a 3-0 lead, but senior Thomas McAleer (Long Island, N.Y./ New York Bobcats) connected for his eighth goal of the season at the 11:57 mark to cut the Falcon deficit to only two.

In the third period, Fitchburg State held a 15-5 shot advantage, connecting on four goals to secure the comeback victory. Junior Brett Provost (Ludlow, Mass/ Connecticut Wolfpack) and classmate Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass/Braintree) sparked the Falcon comeback with consecutive goals, merely 18 seconds apart, while junior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./ UMass Lowell) netted the game-winning score with just 0.6 seconds left to seal the win.

Between the pipes, senior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./ New York Applecore) earned the victory for Fitchburg State, totaling 26 saves to improve to 3-6-2 on the year. Senior Ian Wilson (Tulsa, O.K./ North Bay Skyhawks) took the loss for the Owls (2-4-1) stopping 34 shots in the complete game effort.

For the contest, Fitchburg State held a 39-30 advantage in shots, but Westfield State converted 2-of-4 power plays to keep its pace in the contest. Caveney paced the Falcons with three points on the night, while junior Cory Callen (Annadale, N.J./Oswego State) and McAleer added two points apiece.

Fitchburg State (7-8-2, 6-4-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Thursday as it hosts Plymouth State at 4 p.m. Westfield State (4-11-3, 2-8-2 MASCAC) will visit Plymouth State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
