Fitchburg State Upends Westfield State, 5-2

Canter collects three points in Falcons MASCAC win vs. Owls

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 18, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team got back into the win column this evening, defeating Westfield State University, 5-2 in MASCAC action.

Senior forward Bryan Canter (Anchorage, AK/Helena Bighorns) led the Fitchburg State offense with three points on one goal and two assists, while junior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) added a pair of assists.

Westfield State took a short-lived 1-0 lead on a power play goal by freshman Steve Evans midway through the first period, but Fitchburg State knotted the score just two minutes later as Canter netted his first goal of the night on a Falcon power-play.

In the second period, Fitchburg State would take a two goal advantage as junior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) and sophomore Nick Zaino (Duryea, Pa./CD Selects) connected for back-to-back markers. Caveney extended the Falcons lead to 2-1 with a score at the 3:25 mark, while Zaino netted a power play score at 8:46.

Fitchburg State went ahead 4-1 with 5:35 remaining in the game on a goal by senior Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects) before classmate Travis Bertolotti (Long Island, N.Y./New York Bobcats) iced the contest with an empty-netter with only 0:15 remaining.

Westfield State's Lucas Romero scored the Owls second goal of the contest with a power play tally in the third but Fitchburg  State sophomore Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) registered 43 saves for the contest to seal the victory for the Falcons. Westfield State out-shot the Falcons 45-32, but Fitchburg State converted a pair of power-play in the victory.

Fitchburg State (9-12-3, 8-7-2 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Plymouth State at 7 p.m. Westfield State (6-13-5, 4-10-4 MASCAC) will host Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday at 7:35 p.m.
