Wolcott posts 25 saves in Falcons MASCAC setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 9, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team hosted the Lancers of Worcester State, falling 6-3 in MASCAC action this evening.
Worcester State got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead just 0:27 into the match on a Brenton Dyok (Rocklin, Calif./San Diego Gulls) marker, but Fitchburg State responded midway through the period as freshman Carlo DiPiazza (Ridgewood, N.J./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) found the back of the net with helpers from Jack Vets (Hamden, Conn./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) and Nick Zaino (Duryea, Pa./CD Selects).
The Lancers added another goal late in the first frame, snagging a 2-1 advantage off the stick of Nathan Stanley (Boise, ID/Idaho Steelheads) and later increased their margin to 3-1 with a score from Stephen Rock (Tulsa, OK/Idaho Jr. Steelheads) early in the second stanza. The Falcons chipped away at the Lancer lead later in the period, as junior Cory Callen (Annadale, N.J./Oswego State) converted his ninth goal of the season at the 12:33 mark.
In the third period, Worcester State sealed the contest, netting a pair of goals early on and adding an empty-netter in the final two minutes. Taylor Lanville (Edmonds, Wash./ Helena Bighorns) would score the game winner for the Lancers at the 4:35 mark when he connected on a Vinny Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla./ El Paso Rhinos) pass. The Falcons cut their deficit with a power play goal by Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./ UMass Lowell) but a pair of insurance goals from the Lancers iced the game for Worcester State.
Sophomore Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./ Wilsconsin-Stevens Point) suffered the loss in the goal for the Falcons who held a 38-30 lead in shots. Wolcott stopped 25 of the Lancers 30 shots while senior Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, N.Y./ Erie Community College) picked up the win for Worcester State totaling 35 saves.
Fitchburg State (8-10-3, 7-6-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Assumption College at 7 p.m. Worcester State (8-10-3, 5-8-2 MASCAC) will visit Framingham State on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
