Becker Resists Fitchburg State Comeback, 4-3

Lorenzen registers two goals for the Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 3, 2012) – Becker College collected three first period goals en-route to a 4-3 victory over Fitchburg State in second round action of the ICFCU shootout hosted by Fitchburg State this afternoon.

Becker jumped out to an early lead just 4:57 into the contest as freshman Tyler Auricchio (Henderson, Nev./Idaho Jr. Steelheads) found the back of the net for his first marker of the season on assists from sophomore Nick Di Nardo (Wellington, Fla./Laconia Leafs) and senior Don Kane (Staten Island, N.Y./New York Bobcats).

The Ice Hawks quickly doubled their lead (2-0) just 34 second later with David Graham's (Rancho Cucamonga, Cali./Helena Jr. Bighorns) third goal of the year before freshman Paul Hefferin (Boynton Beach, Fla./Hampton Roads Jr. Whalers) capped their scoring at the 12:49 mark for the 3-0 margin after one period of play.

Following Auricchio's second tally of the contest, Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence (4-1) at the 15:10 mark of the second frame as freshman Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) knocked home a loose puck in front of the net for his first collegiate score. Freshmen Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt./Bay State Breakers) and Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) assisted on the play.

In the final frame, the Falcons cut the deficit in half (4-2) midway through the period, when Lorenzen received a pass from senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) and beat Hawks goalie Gregg Hussey (Medford, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) on a breakaway attempt. Fitchburg State made it a one goal game with just over four minutes remaining in regulation as freshman Nick Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) notched his first collegiate score, but the Ice Hawks we able to hold on for the 4-3 victory.

In net, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) registered 20 saves in 39 minutes of action for the Falcons, while Hussey made 28 stops for Becker in the complete game effort.

Despite the victory for the Hawks, the Leopards of Wentworth were crowned the 2012 ICFCU Tournament Champions, collecting seven total points on the weekend. Each team was awarded one point for each period won in addition to two points for each victory and one point for each tie. Wentworth opened the tournament with two points, tying Fitchburg State in game one Friday night, before posting five points this afternoon with a 7-2 win over Worcester State.

Fitchburg State (0-1-1, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday at it travels to New England College at 7 p.m. Becker (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC NE) will visit Curry College next Saturday at 4:35 p.m.
