Fitchburg State Doubles Up Framingham State, 6-3

Lorenzen registers three points in Falcons conference victory

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (January 10, 2013) – Freshman Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) posted three points on two goals and one assist as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated Framingham State, 6-3 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at Loring Arena.

Framingham State grabbed the lead at the 6:24 mark as sophomore Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass./St. John's) notched his first tally of the season on assists from juniors Daniel Miressi (Monroe, Conn./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) and Bo Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) for the 1-0 margin.

The Rams doubled their lead (2-0) with about six minutes remaining in the stanza when sophomore Ryan McDonald (Anchorage, AK./Seattle Totems) found the back the of the net for his ninth goal of the year. Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence late in the period as freshman Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) notched his first collegiate marker to make the score 2-1 after one period of play.

In the second stanza, Fitchburg State knotted the score (2-2) at the 4:13 mark when Lorenzen struck for his sixth score of the season off an assist from senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies).

The Falcons took their first lead of the game less than four minutes later on freshman Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./New York Applecore) fifth tally of the year, using feeds from Holmes and classmate John Celli (Leominster, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) for the 3-2 advantage.

Framingham State retied the game (3-3) midway through the frame on Miressi's team leading 12th score of the season before Fitchburg State regained the lead for good on back-to-back goals from Caveney and senior Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) to take a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame.

In the third period of play, the Falcons added an insurance marker at the 8:06 mark as Lorenzen registered his second goal of the contest resulting in the 6-3 final. Senior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) and Quinn assisted on the play.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a 50-41 advantage in shots, while the Rams notched four power-play opportunities. In net, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) recorded 38 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while junior Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, Calif./Minnesota Owls) made 44 stops for Framingham State in the setback.

Fitchburg State (5-7-1, 4-3-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Salem State University to take on the Vikings at 2 p.m. Framingham State (2-10-0, 0-7-0 MASCAC) will visit Plymouth State University on Saturday for a contest starting at 6 p.m.
