New England College Downs Fitchburg State, 5-3

Wolcott records season best 45 saves in Falcons non-conference setback

HENNEKER, N.H. (November 6, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team fell to New England College, 5-3 in non-conference ice hockey action this evening.

New England College opened the scoring at the 8:14 mark, as junior Ben Maclaughlin (Beverly, Mass./Yarmouth Mariners) connected for a power-play tally on assists from senior Ben Souders (Downington, Penn./New Jersey Hitman) and freshman Cheyne Matheson (Wheatley Ont./Leamington) for the 1-0 lead.

Fitchburg State quickly knotted the score (1-1) about four minutes later, when senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) struck for his second score of the season, using helpers from classmates Trevor Lawler (New England Jr. Huskies) and Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree). The Pilgrims regained the lead with less than three minutes remaining in the opening period, using Maclaughlin's second goal of the contest for a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Pilgrims upped their lead just 8:14 into the second frame as junior Samuli Turunen (Joensuu, Finland/Jokipojat) found the back of the net for his second marker of the season. Freshman James O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C./Yarmouth Mariners) added his first score of the year, giving New England College a three goal margin at the 13:16 mark.

The Green and Gold cut the deficit (4-3) to one with back-to-back goals from sophomore Sean Loebs (Cresskill, N.J./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) and freshman John Celli (Leominster, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) but New England College iced the game with 29 seconds remaining regulation when senior Johan Qvarfordt (Sodertalje, Sweden/Sodertalje Hockey Club) notched his first tally of season to secure the Pilgrims first victory of the year.

In net, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) posted a season high 45 saves for Fitchburg State, while junior Sebastian Anderson (Sundyberg, Sweden/Sollentuna) totaled 24 stops in the complete game effort for the Pilgrims..

Fitchburg State (0-2-1, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action next Tuesday as it hosts Framingham State University at 7 p.m. New England College (1-1-1, 0-0-0 ECAC East) will visit Skidmore College on Friday at 7 p.m.
