Plymouth State Blanks Fitchburg State, 1-0

Wolcott registers 35 saves in Falcons MASCAC setback

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (December 8, 2012) – Sophomore Mark Freitag (Westmont, Ill./Valley Jr. Warriors) tallied the game winning marker with less than one minute remaining in the second frame as the Plymouth State ice hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 1-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Hanaway Rink.

With the victory, Plymouth State improves to 7-1-0 and 5-1-0 in the MASCAC, while the Falcons fall to 4-5-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.

Following a scoreless first period, Plymouth State broke the 0-0 stalemate at the 19:17 mark when Freitag collected his third tally of the season. The freshman forward took a feed from junior Kyle Greco (Hillside, Ill./St. Louis Bandits) and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

In the final stanza, the Panthers nearly doubled their lead with about 7:30 remaining in the contest as sophomore Phil Arnone (Litchfield, N.H./Winchendon School) had a pair of point blank scoring chances turned aside by Falcon goaltender Randy Wolcott (East Haven Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point)
