Plymouth State Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 3-2 (OT)

Lawler and Lorenzen tally one goal apiece, Wolcott records 36 saves for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 26, 2013) – Freshman forward Andrew Wigg (Lantz, NS./Yarmouth Mariners) registered the game-winning marker at the 2:59 mark of overtime, as Plymouth State defeated Fitchburg State, 3-2 in overtime in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at the Wallace Civic Center.

In the opening frame, Fitchburg State took a early lead just 3:11 into the period as senior forward Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass. New England Jr. Huskies) struck for his fifth marker for the season, using feeds from classmates Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr Huskies) and Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) for the 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) 1:10 later when freshman Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) found the back of the net for his tenth of year. Lawler and Quinn assisted on the play. Plymouth State cut into the lead at the 7:39 mark as senior Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) blasted a slap shot to the far side for his sixth tally of season on assists from Wigg and senior Kyle Greco (Hillside, IL./St. Louis Bandits).

The Panther knotted the score (2-2) midway through the stanza when junior forward Phil Arnone (Litchfield, N.H./Winchendon School) slipped the puck inside the right post as Wigg and senior JC Richardson) picked up assists on the play.

After a scoreless second period, The Green and Gold nearly took the lead with 8:50 remaining in regulation as freshman Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors)'s breakaway attempted was turned aside by Panther goaltender Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden). Plymouth State's best scoring chance occurred with about five minutes left as Falcon net-minder Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) made a diving save on Cotlle's wrist shot to send the game into overtime.

Following a pair of Falcon scoring chances by Lawler and Lorenzen, Wigg collected his own rebound and tucked the puck inside the left post to secure Plymouth State's 14th victory of the season.

Throughout the match, Plymouth State outshot Fitchburg State, 39-33, while the Falcons finished 1-ofr-3 with the man advantage. Between the pipes, Wolcott stopped 36 shots for Fitchburg State in the setback, while Astedt posted 31 saves for the Panthers in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (6-10-2, 5-6-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Rams of Framingham State University at 7 p.m. Plymouth State (14-5-0, 10-2-0 MASCAC) will visit Westfield State University Thursday for a contest starting at 7:35 p.m.
