Fitchburg State Shuts Down Salem State, 3-1

Wolcott records season high 53 saves in Falcons key conference victory

SALEM, Mass. (January 12, 2013) – Junior net-minder Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) posted a season best 53 saves as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated Salem State, 3-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon.

Following a scoreless first period, Fitchburg State broke a 0-0 deadlock at the 6:31 mark as sophomore Sean Loebs (Cresskill, N.J./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) found the back of the net for his third marker of the season off an assist from classmate Brett Nussbaum (Boca Raton, Fla./CD Selects) for the 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) midway through the frame when senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) blasted a shot past Salem State goaltender Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, NV./Helena Big Horns) for his team-leading tenth score of the year, using feeds from freshman Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) and senior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies)

The Green and Gold upped their lead less than one minute later as rookie John Celli(Leominster, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) notched his fourth goal on the season to put the Falcons up 3-0. Freshman Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) and Loebs assisted on the play.

In the final stanza, Salem State broke up the shutout bid 14:46 into the frame, when sophomore forward Kristofer Faric (Whitby, ON./Castleton State College) struck for his fifth tally of the season, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the contest, Salem State held a commanding 54-26 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 2-for-5 on the power-play. Between the pipes, Wolcott was impressive all game long, turning aside a season high 53 shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while Sutliffe finished with 23 saves for the Vikings in the setback.

Fitchburg State (6-7-1, 5-3-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Lancers of Worcester State University at 7 p.m. Salem State (7-5-1, 4-2-1 MASCAC) will visit UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday for a contest starting at 7:30 p.m.
