UMass Dartmouth Blanks Fitchburg State, 4-0

Wolcott registers 35 saves in Falcons MASCAC setback

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (December 1, 2012) – Senior Dave McDonald (Wakefield, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) collected a pair of goals as the UMass Dartmouth ice hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 4-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon.

UMass Dartmouth opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the first stanza as sophomore forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI./Rochester Ice Hawks) registered his third tally of the season, using assists from freshman Swann Boisvert (Blainville, QC./Pembroke Lumber Kings) and sophomore Steve Ginand (Milford, Mass./Northern Cyclones) for the 1-0 lead.

The Corsairs doubled their lead (2-0) with about six minutes remaining in the frame when McDonald fired a shot into the netting for his fifth marker of the year. Seniors Nick Marquis (Londonderry, N.H./Valley Jr. Warriors) and Matt Correia (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) assisted on the play.

In the second frame, the hosts upped their lead at the 17:33 mark as junior Greg Girtatos (Tyngsboro, Mass./Bishop Guertin) slipped the puck inside the near post for his first score of the season for the 3-0 advantage.

In the final period of play, the Corsairs sealed the victory at the 2:39 mark as McDonald intercepted a pass and slipped and the puck into the back of the cage of his second short-handed tally of the game.

Throughout the contest UMass Dartmouth outshot Fitchburg State 39-26, while the Falcons notched five power-plays throughout the game. In net, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) posted 35 saves for the visitors in the complete game effort, while senior Ryan Williams (Milton, ON./Huntsville Otters) stopped 26 shots for the Corsairs en-route his first shutout of the season.

Fitchburg State (3-4-1, 2-2-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts Westfield State University for a matchup starting at 7 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (4-1-2, 3-0-1 MASCAC) will host Plymouth State University on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
