Fitchburg State Draw Wentworth, 2-2 (OT)

Quinn and Caveney score in Falcons season-opener

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 2, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 draw with the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology in opening round action of the 2012 IC Credit Union Shootout this evening.

After a scoreless first period of play, Wentworth got on the board first early in the second period as junior Fred Gervasi (Mississauga, Ont./Georgetown) connected with Devin Cobbold (Ottawa, Ont/Kanata) for his first goal of the season at the 4:11 mark.

Fitchburg State responded in the third frame, using back-to-back goals from seniors Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) and Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies). Quinn netted the equalizer for the Falcons at the 6:28 mark, taking feeds from Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr.Huskies) and Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) on the play. Caveney followed suit later in the period, finding the back of the net at the 13:06 mark with helpers from Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) and Lawler.

The Leopards battled down to the wire however, netting a game-tying goal with just 0:36 remaining on the clock. Senior Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif./St. Louis) was the hero for Wentworth, posting his first goal of the season with a feed from Reed Rushing (Seattle, Wash./Bowling Green).

Jameson's marker forced a five minute overtime period between both teams, however Fitchburg State's two attempts on target in the extra frame could not land to keep the game at a 2-2 standstill. For the contest, Wentworth held a 31-22 advantage in shots, while Fitchburg State notched seven power-plays on the evening.

In net, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) put forth a complete game effort for the Falcons, totaling 29 saves on the evening, while sophomore Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que./New York) notched 20 stops for the visitors.

Fitchburg State (0-0-1, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action tomorrow afternoon as it battles Becker at 4 p.m. Wentworth (0-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC NE) will face Worcester State at 1 p.m.
