Wentworth Edges Fitchburg State, 2-1

Wysocki registers season best 42 saves in Falcons non-conference setback

BOSTON, Mass. (January 6, 2013) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey dropped a 2-1 decision to Wentworth Institute of Technology in second round action of the 48th annual Codfish Bowl hosted by UMass Boston this afternoon.

In the opening frame, Wentworth took the lead midway through the period as sophomore Curtis Heinz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Traverse City) received a feed from classmate Jordan Bourgonje (Spruce Grove, Alta./University of Alberta) and fired a shot into the back of the net for his first score of the season to take a 1-0 advantage after one period of play.

Fitchburg State quickly tied the game (1-1) just 2:43 into the second stanza when senior Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) collected his fourth marker of the year off assists from freshman Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) and senior Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree).

The Leopards regained the lead at the 8:52 mark as junior Cameron Gibson (Valencia, Calif./Humboldt) notched a power play tally for his second goal of the year for the 2-1 margin. Freshman Devin Cobbold (Ottawa, Ont./Kanata) and Heinz assisted on the play.

In the third period of play, the Falcons nearly knotted the score early in the frame as freshmen Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt./Bay State Breakers) and Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./New York Applecore) each blasted shots on goal but Wentworth goaltender Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta./Spruce Grove) was able to turn away both attempts to preserve the 2-1 victory for the Leopards.

Throughout the contest, Wentworth out-shot Fitchburg State 44-19, while the Falcons notched four power-play opportunities. In net, sophomore Ryan Wysocki(Grand Rapids, Mich./Toledo Cherokee) posted a season high 44 stops for Fitchburg State, while Miller made 18 saves for the Leopards in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (4-7-1, 3-3-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Framingham State University to take on the Rams at 7:20 p.m. Wentworth (7-6-1, 3-2-0 ECAC NE) is off until next Tuesday when it hosts Tufts University at 7:30 p.m.
