Fitchburg State Skates Past Worcester State, 5-1

Caveney and Rojas collect two points each in Falcons MASCAC victory

Auburn, Mass. (November 17, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey defeated Worcester State University, 5-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Horgan Memorial Rink.

Following a scoreless first period, senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) put the Falcons on the board at the 2:55 mark. The senior forward collected his third marker of the season on an assist from freshman Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt./Bay State Breakers) for the 1-0 advantage.

The Green and Gold double their lead (2-0) about three and half minutes later when freshman Nat Rojas (Elkridge, Md./Washington Jr. Nats) registered his first collegiate tally, using feeds from senior Brett Provost (Ludlow, Mass./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) and sophomore Sean Loebs (Cresskill, N.J./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack).

The Falcons upped their lead (3-0) at the 18:15 mark as freshman Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./New York Applecore) struck for his third goal of the season before classmate Timmy Genova (Smithtown, N.Y./New York Applecore) found the back of the net less than two minutes later to put Fitchburg State up 4-0 going into the second intermission

In the final frame, Fitchburg State capped its scoring just three minutes into the period, when junior forward Carlo DiPiazza (Ridgewood, N.J./Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) recorded his first score of the season off an assist from sophomore Curtis Nikitas (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernards). Worcester State broke up the shutout with seven minutes remaining in the contest, as sophomore Nathan Stanley (Meriden, ID/Idaho Jr. Steelheads) tallied his third goal of the season, for the 5-1 final.

For the contest, Fitchburg State held a 40-29 margin in shots, while the Lancers notched five power plays throughout the match. Between the pipes, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) posted 28 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while junior Taylor Fant (Denver, CO/Boulder Bison) totaled 22 stops for the hosts in 40 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State (2-3-1, 2-1-0 MASCAC) returns to action next Thursday as it travels to Franklin Pierce University for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Worcester State (0-6-0, 0-3-0 MASCAC) will play Assumption College next Saturday at 5:40 p.m. in first round action of the Worcester City Cup hosted by Nichols College.
