Worcester State Stuns Fitchburg State, 6-2

Bedard and Lorenzen register one goal apiece in Falcons setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 15, 2013) - Junior forward Jordan Roberts (Littleton, CO./Boulder Bison) registered four points on two goals and two helpers as Worcester State University defeated Fitchburg State, 6-2 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

In the opening period of play, Worcester State took the lead 6:43 into the stanza as Roberts redirected a shot of the stick of sophomore Vinny Bohn (Spring Hill, FL./El Paso Rhinos) for his second tally of the season to put the Lancer up 1-0.

The Lancers upped their lead (3-0) notching back-to-back scores, senior defenseman Tim Bowman (Moor Park, CA./Tulsa Rampage) fired a wrist shot inside the near post at the 11:20 mark for his second marker of the year before sophomore Nathan Stanley (Meriden, ID./Idaho Jr. Steelheads) struck for his sixth goal of the year less than two minutes later.

In the second frame, Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence just 2::37 into the frame as freshman Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt./Bay State Breaker) tallied his fifth score of the season off assists from classmates John Celli (Leominster, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) and Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) to make the score 3-1.

Worcester State regained the three goal margin (4-1) when sophomore Stephen Rock (Tulsa, OK./Idaho Jr. Steelheads) out raced the defense and slipped the puck into the net for his fourth score of the year, using a feed from junior Derek Serbon (Crown Point, IN./Tulsa Rampage) heading into the final period of play.

In the final stanza, the Lancers secured their fifth victory of the season as Roberts connected on his second marker of the game just 1:31 into the period before Serbon capped Worcester State's scoring midway into the frame for the 6-1 lead. The Green and Gold would cap the scoring at the 12:27 mark as freshman Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va./Valley Jr. Warriors) posted his eighth tally on the year resulting in the 6-2 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a slim 32-26 advantage in shots, while the Lancers finished 0-for-4 on the power-play. In net, freshman Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, MA./Long Beach Bombers) collected 30 saves for Worcester State in the complete game effort, while sophomore Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Toledo Cherokee) stopped 11 shots for the Falcons in 37 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State (6-8-1, 5-4-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 4 p.m. Worcester State (5-10-0, 2-7-0 MASCAC) will host Framingham State University on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
