Fitchburg State Blanks Worcester State, 4-0

Connolly nets a pair of goals in Falcons MASCAC victory

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 7, 2013) – Freshman Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./New York Applecore) registered two goals as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated Worcester State University, 4-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Horgan Memorial Rink.

In the opening period, Fitchburg State took the lead midway through the stanza as freshman Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) found the back of the net for his third tally of the season, using feeds from senior John Soroka (Philadelphia, Penn./Philadelphia Little Flyers) and classmate Mike Morrison (Scarborough, Me./Portland Jr. Pirates) for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) one minute later when Connolly blasted a shot past Lancer goaltender Taylor Fant (Denver, Co./Boulder Bison) for his 12th score on the year. Senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) and freshman John Celli (Leominster, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) assisted on the play.  

In the second frame, the Green and Gold upped their advantage at the 4:49 mark as Connolly connected for his second marker of the contest off assists from Holmes and Caveney for the 3-0 lead. Fitchburg State secured its ninth victory of the season with just under eight minutes remaining in the period, as Caveney's shot found the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the match, Worcester State held a 39-37 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-2 with the man advantage. In net, junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) collected 39 saves for Fitchburg State en-route to the complete game shutout, while Fant stopped 33 shots for the Lancers in the setback.

Fitchburg State (9-10-2, 8-6-1 MASCAC) returns to action next Thursday as it visits the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth for a contest starting at 7:30 p.m. Worcester State (6-13-2, 3-10-2 MASCAC) will travel to Framingham State on Saturday at 6:20 p.m.
