Salem State Nips Fitchburg State, 2-1

Johannesson registers first collegiate tally in Falcons MASCAC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 22, 2014) – Junior forward Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) netted the game-winning tally at the 15:57 mark of the third period as the Salem State ice hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Salem State opened the scoring at the 14:10 mark as freshman forward John Needham (Medford, Mass.) received a pair of feeds from sophomore Keaton Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) and junior Kristofer Faric (Whitby, Ont.) and wristed a shot into the right side of net for his eighth marker of the season for the 1-0 lead going into the first intermission..

The Falcons nearly tied the score with just under a minute remaining in the period when freshman forward Mike Fish (Salisbury, Mass.) had a pair of shots that whistled just wide of the near post.

In the second period of play both teams had several quality scoring chances but Fitchburg State goaltender Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich.) turned away 15 shots in the stanza, while Vikings goalie Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev.) ended the period with five saves to preserve the 1-0 margin after two periods of play.

In the final frame, the Green and Gold knotted the score (1-1) at the 11:53 mark as newcomer Jon Johannesson (Red Lake, Ont.) collected a rebound off the stick of Fish and buried a shot into the upper left corner for his first collegiate tally.

The visitors regained the lead for good four minutes later however when Goodwin tucked a shot inside the far post for his eighth goal on the season, using an assist from junior Cameron Banwell (Toronto, Ont.), resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the match, Salem State held a 34-26 margin in shots, while the Falcons notched three power-play opportunities. Between the pipes, Wysocki finished with 32 saves in 58:55 minutes of action for Fitchburg State, while Sutliffe turned aside 25 of the 26 shots he faced in the complete game effort for the Vikings.

Fitchburg State (10-13-1, 7-9-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m. Salem State (13-9-2, 10-5-2 MASCAC) will host Worcester State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
