
Skidmore Upends Fitchburg State, 3-1
Bedard collects one goal; Wysocki stops 22 shots for Falcons
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (November 30, 2013) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Skidmore College in non-conference action this afternoon in opening round action of the 2013 Skidmore College Invitational at Saratoga City Rink.
Skidmore grabbed the lead at the 18:46 mark as senior Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wis.) redirected a pass into the back of the net for his team-leading sixth tally of the season on assists from classmate Brad Schuler (Delran, N.J.) and freshman Anthony Bird (Central Square, N.Y.) for the 1-0 margin after one period of play.
In the second frame, Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) just 1:39 into the stanza when sophomore forward Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt.) connected for his third score of the season on the power-play. Classmates Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va.) and John Celli (Leominster, Mass.) assisted on the play.
The Thoroughbreds regained the lead four and half minutes later as junior T.J. Schneider (Sound Beach, N.Y.) gathered feeds from senior Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.) and Schuler and deposited the puck inside the far post for his first goal of the season for the 2-1 advantage going into the second intermission.
In the final period of play, the hosts added an insurance tally at the 16:31 mark when Giancin gathered a pass from freshman Marc Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) and fired a shot inside the near post for his fourth score of the season, resulting in the 3-1 final.
Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a 30-25 margin in shots, while the Thoroughbreds finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage. In goal, junior Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich.) made 22 saves for the Falcons in the setback, while freshman Jack McDonald (King City, Ont.) posted 29 saves for Skidmore in the complete game effort.
Fitchburg State (4-5-0, 2-2-0 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as it battles Elmira/Buffalo State in the consolation round of the 2013 Skidmore Invitational at 1 p.m. Skidmore College (3-3-2, 1-3-2 ECAC EAST) will take on Buffalo State/Elmira tomorrow in the championship game at 4 p.m.
