Westfield State Blanks Fitchburg State, 4-0

Wysocki registers 41 saves for Falcons in MASCAC setback

WESTFIELD, Mass. (February 15, 2014) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team was in action this evening, dropping a 4-0 decision to Westfield State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Amelia Park Rink.

Westfield State jumped out to quick lead just 1:32 into the first period as senior Billy Miller (Morgan Hill, Calif.) fired a shot into the upper right corner for his second goal of the season for the 1-0 margin after twenty minutes of play as senior Vince Perreault (Braeside, Ont.) and sophomore Dalton Jay (Hamilton, Ont.) assisted on the play.

In the second stanza, Fitchburg State turned up the pressure as freshman Jon Johannesson (Red Lake, Ont.) and junior Brett Nussbaum (Boca Raton, Fla.) each had a pair quality scoring chance that Owls goaltender Eddie Davey (Orangeville, Ont.) was able to turn aside to preserve the 1-0 advantage going into the second intermission.

In the final period of play, the Owls upped their lead at the 7:31 mark of the third period when junior forward Frank Zuccaro (Newmarket,, Ont.) gathered a feed from sophomore P.J. McCadden (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and deposited the puck inside the far post for his fourth tally on the season for the 2-0 margin.

Westfield State tacked on an insurance marker with six minutes remaining in regulation when freshman Maxime Richard (Trois Rivieres, Que.) found senior Tyler Prendergast (Richmond Hill, Ont.) in front of the net for his seventh score of the season before the Owls capped the game's scoring at the 16:34 mark as senior Taylor Murphy (Toronto, Ont.) struck for his seventh marker on the year, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Westfield State held a 45-29 advantage in shots, while the Falcons registered four power-play opportunities. Between the pipes, junior Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich.) recorded 41 saves for Fitchburg State in the setback, while Davey posted 29 stops for the Owls in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (9-11-1, 6-7-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Monday as it hosts the Lancers of Worcester State University for a matchup starting at 2 p.m. Westfield State (9-12-1, 8-6-1 MASCAC) will host UMass Dartmouth on Thursday at 7:35 p.m.
