Wentworth Clips Fitchburg State, 3-1

Fish collects lone goal in Falcons non-conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass.– Wentworth registered two goals in the third period en-route to a 3-1 victory over Fitchburg State in non-conference ice hockey action at the Wallace Civic Center in second round action of the 2014 ICFCU Shootout this afternoon.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 6:41 mark as sophomore Mike Fish gathered a feed from classmate Jon Johannesson and fired a shot into the back of the net for his first tally on the season for the 1-0 advantage.

The Leopards knotted the score midway through the stanza when senior Jordan Bourgonje deposited the puck inside the near post off assists from freshmen Brian Farkas and Jake McDonough to make the score 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Following a scoreless second period, Wentworth took the lead for good just 15 seconds into the period as newcomer Erik Andersson deposited a shot into the lower left corner of the net for his first collegiate tally for the 2-1 margin, using an assist from senior Kevin Crowe.

The visitors added an insurance markers three minutes later when sophomore forward Matthew Heise collected a pass from senior Ben Iwanowski and Bourgonje and slipped the puck into the back of the net, resulting in the 3-1 final

Throughout the contest Wentworth held a 39-24 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-3 on the power-play. In goal, senior Ryan Wysocki collected 36 saves in in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while counterpart Alex Peck finished with 23 stops en-route to his second victory of the season for the Leopards.

With the victory, Wentworth was crowned the 2014 ICFCU Tournament Champions, collecting seven total points on the weekend. Each team was awarded one point for each period won in addition to two points for each victory and one point for each tie. Wentworth opened the tournament with four points, defeating Worcester State, 3-1 in game one Friday night, before posting three points this afternoon with a 3-1 win over Fitchburg State. 

Fitchburg State (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday at it visits the Pilgrims of New England College at 7 p.m. Wentworth (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC NE) will host Johnson and Wales next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
