Assumption Nips Fitchburg State, 3-1

Rojas collects lone goal for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Junior forward Brandon Bere registered a hat-trick as the Grey Hounds of Assumption College defeated Fitchburg State University, 3-1 in non-conference ice hockey action at Horgan Memorial Rink this evening.

Assumption open the scoring in the first period at the 15:11 mark as Bere received a pass from classmate Alex Erban and fired a shot into the back of the net for his team-leading ninth marker of the season for the 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle frame, Fitchburg State knotted the score midway through the stanza when junior forward Nat Rojas netted his first tally of the season on an assist from sophomore Mike Fish to make the score 1-1 going into the third period.

In the final period of play, Assumption would regain the lead for good 6:24 into the stanza as as sophomore Ryan Gomez slide a pass over to Bere, who proceeded to deposit the back inside the near post for his second score of the contest for the 2-1 margin.

The hosts would secure the victory late in the period as Bere completed the hat-trick with his third goal on the evening with an empty netter on a feed from senior Ben Kuzma, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a 37-31 advantage in shots, while the Greyhounds finished 0-for-3 on the power-play. In net, senior Ryan Wysocki posted 28 saves for the Falcons in 59:23 minutes of action, while junior Chris Hemhauser turned aside 36 of the 37 shots he faced for Assumption in the victory.

Fitchburg State (3-7-2, 2-3-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Franklin Pierce University for a contest starting at 7:30 p.m. Assumption (6-8-0, 1-3-0 NE-10) visit Nichols College on Friday at 6:40 p.m.
