Worcester State Downs Fitchburg State, 4-1

Lorenzen nets lone goal for Falcons in MASCAC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team was in action this evening, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action in a game with Sterling Cup implications at the Wallace Civic Center.

Worcester State took control during the opening minute of play when freshman forward Patrick Germain converted a breakaway, burying a shot into the upper left corner off an assist from classmate Mike Moran for his fourth tally on the season for the 1-0 lead.

In the middle stanza, the Lancers doubled their lead (2-0) when senior defenseman Ryan Menard found twine for the unassisted goal for his first tally of the season.

Moments later senior forward Max Lorenzen connected on his first goal of the season, getting a one-timer assist by linesmate Ryan Connolly before sending the puck past freshman Max Kirkwood in net bringing the hosts within one at 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

In the final period of play, the visitors increased their advantage at the at the 5:25 mark when junior forward Alex Dewitz snapped a shot off the face-off in the offensive zone finding the net stick-side for his fifth tally of the season to make the score 3-1. 

The Lancers added an insurance marker with just under two and half minutes remaining as Moran notched his second point of the contest assisting on a look in front of the net for senior forward Nicholas Drill, resulting in the 4-1 final. 

Throughout the contest, Worcester State held a commanding 40-17 advantage in shots, while the Falcons went 0-for4 with the man advantage. In between the pipes, senior Corey McMahon posted 36 saves for Fitchburg State in 58:05 minutes of action, while Kirkwood turned away 16 shots for the Lancers in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (7-8-1, 4-4-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Vikings of Salem State University for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Worcester State (4-10-1, 1-7-1 MASCAC) will host the Owls of Westfield State University on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
