Plymouth State Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 3-1

Fish nets lone goal for Falcons in MASCAC setback

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Fitchburg State suffered a tough 3-1 setback to the Panthers of Plymouth State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action this evening at Hanaway Rink.

In the opening period, Fitchburg State grabbed the lead at the 4:03 mark as junior forward Mike Fish gathered a feed from sophomore forward Corey Hayashi and buried a shot into the back of the net for his third tally of the season for the 1-0 advantage after one period of play.

Following a scoreless second period of play, Plymouth State knotted the score (1-1) just 58 seconds into the third period when freshman forward Matt Volonnino blasted a shot inside the far post for his tenth goal on the year with assists from junior Ian McGilvrey and senior Andrew Wigg.

The Panthers took lead at the 13:43 mark as Wigg received a pass from Volonnino and slipped a shot into the left side of the net for his sixth marker of the season for the 2-1 lead. Fitchburg State nearly retied the contest moments later when junior forward Cameron Snyder blasted a shot on frame but Plymouth State goaltender Gordon Ceasar turned the shot aside to preserve the 2-1 margin.

The hosts added an insurance goal late in the contest when Wigg wristed a shot down the ice into an empty net for his second score of the contest, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the contest Plymouth State University held a 31-19 advantage in shots, while the Green and Gold finished the contest 0-for-9 on the power play. In between the pipes, freshman Quinn Wold made 28 saves for Fitchburg State in 59:48 minutes of action, while Ceasar stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced for the Panthers in the complete game effort.
