Fitchburg State Nipped By Worcester State, 3-1

Celli nets lone goal for Falcons in MASCAC setback

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team dropped a tough 3-1 setback to the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Hart Recreation Center on the campus of Holy Cross in  a contest with Sterling Cup implications.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring just 2:47 into the first period as senior forward John Celli gathered a feed senior Ryan Connolly and wristed a shot inside the far post for his team leading 11th score on the season for the 1-0 advantage.

The Lancers knotted the score (1-1) with just under two minutes remaining in the opening frame when freshman forward Mitchell Purdie fired a shot into the back of the net off an assists from classmates Cody Weaver and Andrew Etheridge.

In the middle stanza, Worcester State took the lead at the 16:36 mark as newcomer Marcus Mazur received a pass from senior Nick Drill and freshman Cody Slocum and deposited the puck into the right side of the net for his seventh tally on the year for the 2-1 margin after two periods of play.

In the final period of play, the hosts upped its advantage just 50 seconds into the third frame when Drill struck for his team-leading eighth goal of the season of an assist from newcomer Mike Moran, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 27-21 advantage in shots, while the Lancers finished 2-for-9 on the power-play. In between the pipes, freshman Charles Jakobsson registered 18 saves for the Falcons in 58 minutes of action, while counterpart Max Kirkwood turned away 26 shots for Worcester State in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (10-11-1, 7-7-1 MASCAC) returns to the ice on Saturday as it travels to Salem State University for a contest starting at 2 p.m. Worcester State (6-13-1, 3-11-1 MASCAC) will visit Westfield State University on Saturday at 5:35 p.m.
