Plymouth State Upends Fitchburg State, 4-1

Fretz nets lone goal for Falcons in MASCAC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey dropped a 4-1 decision to the Panthers of Plymouth State University this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center.

Freshman forward Colby Lancleve picked up two points on a pair of assists to help propel the Panthers past the Falcons completing the regular season-sweep of Fitchburg State.

Plymouth State jumped ahead 9:26 into the first period when junior defenseman Matt Vermillion corralled a rebound off a break away attempt from Lancleve before finishing the possession for his second goal of the season and an early 1-0 advantage.

With just under four minutes left in the first stanza, the hosts took advantage of their second power-play of the game, pulling even in the contest after a pair of passes from senior John Celli and newcomer Ricky Kramer set up the cutting freshman Michael Fretz in front of the net, giving him a share of the team-high with 12 goals this season (1-1).

In the early stages of the middle period the Panthers regained the lead when junior forward Micheal Economos gathered a couple feeds from lines mates Tommy Dowell and Lancleve in the open ice sending a wrist-shot to the back of the net for his 18th point of 2015-2016 season.

With 13:11 left Plymouth State doubled their lead when freshman Tim Perron had his shot ricocheted off a defender and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season extending the lead to 3-1.

In the final minute of the game, with an empty net, the Panthers added an insurance marker with 42 seconds remaining in the contest as freshman Quinn Carroll, pushing the puck into the net for his first collegiate tally, resulting in the 4-1 final.

Throughout the contest, Plymouth State held a 46-27 margin in shots, while the Falcons finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage. In goal freshman net-minder Charles Jakobsson collected 42 saves in 59:41 minutes of action for Fitchburg State, while senior Gordon Ceasar turned away 26 of the 27 shots he faced in the complete game effort for the Panthers.

Fitchburg State (10-13-1, 7-9-1 MASCAC) return to home-ice on Saturday to take on the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth for a MASCAC showdown starting at 4 pm on senior day. Plymouth State (18-5-1, 13-2-1 MASCAC) will travel to Worcester State on the same day for a MASCAC contest, starting at 7 p.m.
