Fitchburg State Shuts Down Framingham State, 3-0

Warila nets first collegiate hat trick for Falcons in key MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Fitchburg State University men's ice hockey team notched their first win of the season in dominating fashion, winning 3-0 against the Framingham State University Rams in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center on Saturday afternoon in a battle of the FSU's.

The Falcons got the better start in a physical game as senior forward Jon Johannesson had two excellent chances within 30 seconds of each other, one hitting the post. The Green and Gold kept on pressing and finally scored with 6:01 left in the first period when newcomer Tyler Warila scored his second goal of the season on an assist by sophomore Nick DiNicola for the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Fitchburg State came out flying in the second period and continued to dominate the match, producing great chances as a result. At 14:30 sophomore Connor McPherson created a chance off the draw that was turned away by Rams goaltender Adam Calabrese.

It turned out that this was going to be Warila's match. At 11:44 he maneuvered his way on to a breakaway where he scored his second marker of the contest to double the Falcons advantage (2-0) before completing the hat trick five minutes later as senior forward Cameron Snyder fed a pass to Warila, who buried a shot into the lower left corner of the net for the 3-0 lead going into the third period.

In the final stanza, Fitchburg State nearly upped its lead midway through the period as senior Mike Fish gathered a centering pass from Snyder and wristed a shot on frame that Calabrese turned aside, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 28-20 advantage in shot, while the Rams finished 0-for-6 on the power-play. In goal, sophomore Charles Jakobsson stopped all 20 shots her faced in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Calabrese made 25 saves in 60 minutes of work for Framingham State.

Fitchburg State (1-2-0, 1-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday, November 10th as it travels to Westfield State University for a 7:35 p.m. tilt. Framingham State (1-1-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will visit Worcester State on Thursday for an 8:30 p.m. start time.
