Jakobsson and Wold combine to stop 36 shot for the Falcons in non-conference setback
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to the Knights of Neumann University in opening round action of the 2016 Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational this evening at the Saratoga City Rink.
Neumann opened the scoring at the 17:24 mark of the first period as senior forward Jory Mullen collected a feed from classmate Shayne Morrissey and junior Liam Board before firing a shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal on the year for the 1-0 lead.
The Knights doubled their margin 13 seconds later when senior forward Shane Topf deposited the puck into the upper right corner of the net off assists from classmates Johannes Sallila and Nick Perruccio to take a 2-0 advantage after one period of play.
In the second frame, Neumann upped its margin 2:21 into the stanza as Mullen settled a pass from Board and junior Ryan Luiten and proceeded to wrist a shot into the right side of the net for his second tally of the contest for the 3-0 lead.
The Knights added to their lead with six minutes remaining in the second period when Board connected on his third score of the season before Mullen completed the hat trick with this third goal of the game to make the score 5-0 after 40 minutes of play.
In the third stanza, Neumann secured its sixth win of the year as Topf found the back of the net for his second marker of the contest as senior Lauri Viitanen and Morrissey assisted on the play, resulting in the 6-0 final.
Throughout the match, Neumann held a 42-17 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-4 on the power-play. In goal, sophomores Charles Jakobsson and Quinn Wold combined to stop 36 shots for Fitchburg State, while freshman Anthony Pupplo made 17 saves for the Knights, en-route to his first collegiate shutout.
Fitchburg State (3-4-1 3-1-1 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as it takes on Connecticut College in the consolation game of the 2016 Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational at 1 p.m. Neumann (6-3-0, 3-3-0 ECAC West) will battle Skidmore tomorrow in the championship game at 4 p.m.
