Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Connecticut College, 3-2

Gordon and Saari propel Falcons to non-conference victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior forward James Gordon tallied a pair of goals to lift the Fitchburg State ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over the Camels of Connecticut College in the consolation game of the 2016 Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational this afternoon at the Saratoga City Rink.

For his efforts, Gordon was named to the 2016 Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Connecticut College took the lead at the 8:57 mark of the first period as freshman forward Rory Galasco gathered a feed from classmate Jacob Moreau and fired a shot into the back of the net for his first collegiate score for the 1-0 margin.

Fitchburg State knotted the score minutes later when senior forward Cameron Snyder buried a shot into the left side of the net for his third tally on the season as sophomore Nick DiNicola and junior Evan Byrnes assisted on the play to make the score 1-1 after 20  minutes of play.

In the second period, the Falcons grabbed the lead with just under four minutes remaining in the stanza as Gordon collected a pass from newcomer Tyler Warila and blasted a shot inside the near post for his third goal on the year for the 2-1 advantage going into the final period of play.

The Camels retied the game (2-2) 4:41 into the third period as senior forward Brian Belisle found the back of net for his first marker on the year as classmate Joe Giordano and Moreau assisted on the play.

The Green and Gold regained the lead for good at the 13:22 mark when Gordon took a feed from DiNicola and deposited the puck into the right side of net for his second goal of the contest, resulting in the 3-2 final.

Throughout the game, Connecticut College finished with a 29-20 margin in shots, while the Falcons went 0-for-4 with the man advantage. In between the pipes, sophomore Kirby Saari stopped 27 shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while freshman Avery Gobbo made 17 saves for the Camels in 58:33 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (4-4-1 3-1-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth to take on the Corsairs for a contest starting at 7:30 p.m. Connecticut College (0-4, 0-2 NESCAC) will visit Middlebury on Friday at 7 p.m.
