Fitchburg State Rallies Past Assumption, 5-4

Fretz and Gordon score twice to complete Falcons comeback non-conference victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team scored three third period goals as the Falcons rallied past Assumption College, 5-4 in non-conference action this evening at the Buffone Arena.

Assumption opened the scoring just 59 seconds into the first period as junior forward Paul Amarone found the back of the net off an assist from junior forward Tommy Mahoney for his team-leading seventh tally on the year for the 1-0 lead.

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) at the 4:01 mark when freshman defenseman Joshua Suboyu gathered a feed from classmateTyler Warila and sophomore Ricky Kramer and deposited the puck into the left side of the net for his first collegiate tally.

In the middle stanza, the Greyhounds regained the lead with just under eight minutes left in the period as freshman defenseman Ben Burton struck for his first collegiate goal with senior Stephen Picard and junior Mike Sorenti assisting on the play to make the score 2-1.

The Green and Gold retied the contest (2-2) roughly 23 seconds later when junior forward James Gordon received a pass form senior forward Jon Johannesson and blasted a shot inside the near post for his sixth marker on the year.

Assumption answered back at the 13:51 mark of the second period as junior forward Brian Farrell wristed a shot into the right side of the net for his fifth goal of the season for the 3-2 advantage before Mahoney added his sixth score on the year with 28 seconds left in the frame for the 4-2 margin going into the final period of play.

In the third period, the Falcons tied the contest up again (4-4), finding the back of the net twice in the first two minutes of the stanza. Gordon started things off for Fitchburg State, finding the back of the net for his second goal of the game just 26 second into the period before sophomore forward Michael Fretz found the back of the net for his fourth marker on the year.

The Green and Gold took its first lead of the game midway through the period when Fretz collected a pass from Gordon and senior Mike Fish and blasted a shot into the lower left corner, resulting in the 5-4 final.

Throughout the game, Fitchburg State held a 47-37 advantage in shots, while Assumption finished 0-for-4 on the power-play. In net, sophomore Charles Jakobsson made 33 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while senior Nick Commesso stopped 42 shots for the Greyhounds in 59:20 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (7-5-1, 4-2-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Owls of Westfield State University for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Assumption (6-9-1, 1-1 NE-10) will host the Red Dragons of Cortland State on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
