Furlane picks up first collegiate goal for Falcons in key MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Four different Falcon players netted a goal as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated Framingham State University, 4-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Sophomore goaltender Kirby Saari notched his first collegiate shutout, while senior defenseman Jordan Furlane scored his first collegiate goal for the Green and Gold.

The Falcons tallied the first score of the game, coming on a power play goal from freshman Kyle Hillick in the slot five minutes into the game for his fourth tally on the year to make the score 1-0. Both goaltenders dominated throughout the remainder of the frame as Rams netminder Greg Harney and Saari were able to stop multiple shots, with Saari stopping all ten shots he faced, while Harney turned away nine of ten shots he saw in net.

In the second period, the Falcons doubled it margin (2-0) roughly four minutes into the frame when newcomer Joshua Suboyu collected a rebound off the stick of senior Jon Johannesson's shot and deposited a shot inside the near post for his second score of the year.

The Green and Gold upped its lead midway through the period as Furlane gathered a feed from sophomore Michael Fretz and junior Corey Hayashi before slipping the puck near side for his first collegiate tally to make the score 3-0.

Fitchburg State capped the scoring at the 17:25 mark of the second stanza when senior forward Mike Fish took a pass from Hillick and blasted a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the 2016-17 campaign, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 28-20 advantage in shot, while Framingham State finished 0-for-7 on the power-play. In net, Saari stopped all 20 shots he faced for the Falcons in 58:20 minutes of action, while Harney made 24 saves for the Rams in the complete game effort.
