Warila Named MASCAC Ice Hockey Rookie Of The Year

Shirley, Mass. native earns conference accolade

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Freshman forward Tyler Warila was selected Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Ice Hockey Rookie of the Year as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

The first-year Falcon ranked fourth in the conference in points (30) and assists (20), while adding ten markers on the year during his rookie campaign to help lead the Green and Gold to the fourth seed in the MASCAC Ice Hockey post-season tournament.

Senior forward Jackson Leef of Westfield State took home MASCAC Player of the Year honors after tying for first in the MASCAC points (40), while also finishing second in goals scored (19) and third in assists (21) as well as ranking second in power-play points with 15.

Erik Noack of UMass Dartmouth was named the 2016-17 Champion's Choice Ice Hockey Coach of the Year in his first season with the Corsairs after leading them to a 12-6 conference mark and third seed in the MASCAC Tournament.

Joining Leef on the MASCAC All-Conference First-Team were Ryan Stevens of Plymouth State and Casey Shea of Salem State at the forward position, Jerry Laakso of UMass Dartmouth and Callum Hofford of Salem State on defense and Drew Michals of UMass Dartmouth in goal.

The MASCAC All-Conference Second Team was comprised of Michael Economos of Plymouth State, Brandon Platt of Salem State and Mike Kelly of UMass Dartmouth at forward, Tim Perron of Plymouth State and Carl Greco of Westfield State on defense and Evan Morelli of Plymouth State in goal.

The Fitchburg State ice hockey team concluded the 2016-17 campaign with an overall record of 11-15-1 and a 7-10-1 clip within conference play.
