Falcons Clipped By Owls, 3-2

Westfield Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team suffered tough 3-2 setback to the Owls of Westfield State University this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Amelia Park Ice Arena..

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 2, Westfield State 3
Records: Fitchburg State (9-7-2, 6-3-2 MASCAC) | Westfield State (9-6-3, 6-4-1 MASCAC)

How It Happened

Westfield State took the lead at the 2:01 mark of the first period as junior forward Rob Neuwirth (Zlin, Czech Republic) connected on his fifth tally of the season for the 1-0 margin before the Owls doubled their advantage (2-0) midway through the frame when junior Francois-Xavier Girard (St. Lazare, Que.) found the back of the net for his seventh goal on the year.

Following a goal by freshman Paul Frys (Portland, Ore.) that pushed Westfield State's margin to 3-0, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit 11:54 into the stanza when sophomore Sascha Figi (Kloten, Switzerland) gathered a feed from senior Ricky Kramer (Barnstead, N.H.) and connected on his team-leading 21st marker of the season.

In the final period of play, the Green and Gold responded again 9:09 into the frame as senior Nick DiNicola (Wolcott, Conn.) potted his ninth score of the 2018-19 campaign on assists from freshman Ryan Murphy (Wayzata, Minn.) and Figi to make the score 3-2, but that as close as the Falcons would get as Owls netminder Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Que.) would turn aside a pair of shots down the stretch to give Westfield State the 3-2 victory.

By the Numbers

  • Figi extends his national leading goals total to 21 for the Falcons
  • 33rd meeting between two schools with Falcons 19-12-2 all-time vs the Owls
