Eastern Connecticut Edges Fitchburg State, 1-0

Carey sparks Falcons defense with seven stops in complete game effort

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 22, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team battled to a 1-0 setback against Eastern Connecticut State University in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Eastern Connecticut State junior Nicholas Boretti (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored the lone goal of the match to snap an 87 minute scoring drought and propel the Warriors to their 12th victory of the season. The goal was Boretti's fifth marker of the season.

Both teams played even to a scoreless first half as neither defense gave in to the offensive pressure. The Warriors held a narrow 7-6 edge in shots with three corner kicks, but Fitchburg State goaltender Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) notched three saves in the frame to keep the score tied at 0-0.

In the second half, Eastern Connecticut out-shot Fitchburg State 9-2, but the stellar play of Carey kept the Falcons within striking distance. The Warriors pressured Carey from the corner several times, but the Falcon net-minder totaled four stops and multiple blocks to keep the match even. The Warriors eventually broke the scoring silence in the 88th minute of the match as Boretti slipped a shot past Carey to clinch the win.

Freshman goalkeeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, N.J./Notre Dame) paced Eastern Connecticut defensively with two save in the contest while Carey recorded seven saves for the Falcons. Senior captain Dave Tyler (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) mustered the best scoring opportunity for the Falcons, he his shot on net sailed high.
