Fitchburg State Falls To Johnson and Wales, 3-1

Daigle nets diving header to spark Falcon offense

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 24, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a tough 3-1 setback to Johnson and Wales University in non-conference action this evening at Pierce Stadium Recreational Complex.

Sophomore Joseph Daigle (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) led the Fitchburg State offense with his second goal of the season, while freshman Danny Bolam (Fletcher, Vt./BFA Airfax) chipped in with his third assist of the year.

Freshman Adam Shaffer (Coming, N.Y./Coming East) led the Johnson and Wales attack with four points on two goals, while classmate Jesse Jackson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) added one score. Sophomore Edwin Sojos (Deep River, Conn./Dean JC) aided the Wildcats with two assists.

Johnson and Wales jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of the match as Shaffer connected from five yards out for his first score of the game. The Wildcats increased their lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute of the match when Jackson took a cross pass from Sojos and deposited it for his first collegiate goal.

Fitchburg State fired back less than two minutes later as Bolam blasted a shot from ten yards out and teammate Joseph Daigle made a diving header to put the Falcons on the board. The Falcons pressured the Johnson and Wales defense all second half, but the Wildcats contained the Fitchburg State pursuit to earn their first victory of the season.

Fitchburg State collected six shots in the match, including five on net, while Johnson and Wales totaled 13 overall. Junior goalkeeper Matt Carey(Stratford, Conn./Stratford) stopped six shots in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while junior Chris Vasquez (Nashua, N.H./Nashua) notched four saves for the Wildcats.         

Fitchburg State (4-3, 0-1 MASCAC) is back in action Saturday as it travels to Salem State at 3 p.m. Johnson and Wales (1-7) will host Rivier College on Saturday.
