FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State University handed Nichols College their first defeat of the season with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday night at Elliot Field in a non-conference men's soccer tilt.. Sophomore Jared Burns tallied two goals, including the game-winner in the come from behind victory for the Falcons.
The score stayed deadlock at 0-0 for the majority of play in the opening half, with both teams having opportunities early to gain an advantage. Senior netminder Aidan Hanratty came up with a big stop at the 27:04 mark when David Melanson nearly gave the Bison the lead.
Junior Patrick DeRosa put the Bison up 1-0 at 41:40 on a penalty shot, which beat Hanratty to the left side.
In the 49th minute Fitchburg State nearly evened the score when freshman Kevin Aldrovandi took a strike from outside the thirty that was just tipped by junior keeper Alex Geas.
Fitchburg State evened the score (1-1) at 51:41 when Burns received a pass from freshman Kevin Aldrovandi just inside the box and put it past the keeper to the left side.
Nichols regained the advantage at 57:51 when sophomore Ian Miller found the back of the net on a pass by Rielee Mohsin. It would be the Falcons on a penalty shot at 65:10 to draw the match even at 2-2 when Aldrovandi tallied his first collegiate marker, beating Geas to the left side.
Burns would score his second tally of the contest and the eventual game-winner with a chip over the keepers head on a through-ball pass from junior Tom Sorrentino, as the Green and Gold secured the 3-2 win.
Hanratty finished with nine stops, while Geas had eight saves in the setback
Overall, Fitchburg State held a 23-18 edge in shots, while both teams had five corner kicks.
Fitchburg State (5-4, 1-1 MASCAC) return to conference play on Saturday as they host MCLA under the lights at 6:00 pm at Elliot Field. Nichols (7-1-2, 20-1 CCC) will look to get back in the win column on Saturday as they host Roger Williams at 2:00 pm.
