Men’s Soccer Stamps Card to MASCAC Tournament

Salem, Mass. -- Freshman Matthew Krikorian (Groton, MA) scored two goals, and the Fitchburg State Falcons clinched the final MASCAC playoff spot with a 2-0 victory over the Salem State Vikings at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.

Fitchburg State concludes the regular season at 5-11-1 (3-4 in the conference) while Salem State ends their season 4-9-3 (0-5-2 in the conference).

Neither team scored in the first half, but the Falcons nearly converted early in the match. Krikorian broke free and had an open look at the net, but keeper Greg Enos (Peabody, MA) made a nice sliding stop to prevent the score. Later, Steven Martinez (Middlesex, N.J.) lofted a ball from 40 yard out that Enos barely kept out of the net as it deflected off the crossbar.

Krikorian finally broke the tie with his first goal at 53:49 of the second half. Krikorian then iced the game 12 minutes later as the Falcons' defense stymied any chance of a Salem State comeback.

Fitchburg State held the advantage over the Vikings in both shots (11-6) and corner kicks (7-3). Alex Al-Zaibak (Hingham, MA) made two saves to record the shutout, while Enos also made two stops in the loss.

The Falcons now await the MASCAC official release for the tournament pairings.
