Fitchburg State Battles Over The Weekend

Bottrell leads men with DIII NE mark of 1.88m in high jump; Robert places first in 60m with ECAC qualifying time of 8:05

BOSTON, Mass. (January 25, 2014) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams were in action this weekend as they competed at both the 2014 John Thomas Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University and the 2014 Art Farnham Invitational hosted by MIT.

At BU, graduate student Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine) continued his stellar running, qualifying for four post-season honors in the mile with an All-NE mark of 4:13.24, while freshman Brandon Hannon (Pelham, N.H.) posted a solid time of 2:47.74 in 1000 meter to qualify for the MASCAC’s.

In the mile, freshman Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) registered a personal best and MASCAC qualifying time of 4:26.93, while classmate Matt Cuomo (Carlisle, Mass.) turned in a post-season and personal best time of 4:35.78. Newcomer Colen Stack (Greenfield, Mass.) rounded the top efforts at BU, posting a MASCAC qualifying time of 4:50.32 in the mile as well.

At MIT, sophomore Akhiel Willis (Acton, Mass.) notched a post season qualifying mark of 5.62m in the long jump, while also running a strong 60m dash with a MASCAC qualifying time of 7.42 to place seventh overall. Classmate Ben Bottrell (Malden, Mass.) was also strong, finishing second in the high jump with a DIII NE mark of 1.88 meters, while senior Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn./ also put forth a solid effort in both the 60m (7.43) and the pole vault (4.15m).

On the track, sophomore Brandon Brideau (Leominster, Mass) placed sixth in the 600m with a MASCAC qualifying time of 1:33.31, while freshman Nicholas Levenson (Halifax, Mass.) and junior Ethan Gorecki (Winchendon, Mass.) also qualified for the MASCAC’s in the 600 meter with times of 1:33.57 and 1:35.82 respectively.

Sophomore Richard Ethier (Shirley, Mass.) placed fourth in the 400m with a post-season qualifying time of 54.98, while in the 60 meter dash freshman Trenton Garlington (Holbrook, Mass.) and classmate Charles De La Rosa (Westfield, Mass.) qualified for the MASCAC’s with times of 7.45 and 7.48.

In the field, sophomore Daniel Rymer (Littleton, Mass.) registered a MASCAC qualifying toss of 10.60m in the weight throw, while junior David Oster (Port Monomouth, N.J) (11.22m) and senior Tim Rymer (Littleton, Mass.) (10.75m) both posted MASCAC qualifying tosses in the shot put to round out the top Falcon efforts on the afternoon.

For the ladies, junior Arthina Robert (Lynn, Mass.) placed first overall in the 60 meter dash to qualify for three post-season honors with an ECAC qualifying time of 8.05, while classmate Rebecca McClure (Lyndeborough, N.Y) continued her outstanding pole vaulting, tying her own school record of 3.35 meter to take top honors in the event.

On the track, junior Jenae Harrison (Sioux Falls, S.D.) also fared well in the 600 meter, turning in a first place finish with a DIII NE qualifying time of 1:45.03, while senior Samantha Wilkinson (Wakefield, Mass.) posted a MASCAC qualifying time of 1:04.46 with a second place effort in the 400 meter.

In the 600 meter, junior Braila Roy (Hyannis, Mass.), freshman Kelly McCarthy (Assonet, Mass.) and seniors Stephanie Irvin (Malden, Mass.) and Karollynn Wickless-Adams (Lansdale, Penn.) registered MASCAC qualifying times of 1:54.21, 1:57.18, 1:57.91 and 2:00.37 respectively.

Sophomore Elizabeth Ward (Ashby, Mass.) ran well in the mile, placing fourth with a post-season time of 6:05.83, while in the field junior Sarah Elliot (E. Meadow, N.Y.) was strong in the shot put, placing sixth with a MASCAC qualifying toss of 10.45 meters to round out the top Falcon efforts on the ladies side.

At Boston University, Wilkinson turned in a DIII NE qualifying time of 1:22.15 in the 500 meter, while Harrison posted a DIII NE qualifying time of 2:24.67 in the 800m. McCarthy ran well in the 1000 meter, posting a MASCAC qualifying time of 3:24.49, while Roy also notched a post-season time of 3:24.49 in the 1000m to cap the top Falcon performances at BU.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams return to action next Saturday as they travel to Tufts University for a meet starting at 9:30 a.m.
