Falcons Earn Three MASCAC Weekly Honors

Kibler named Co-Athlete of the Week; Amaral and Backiel tabbed Co-Rookies of the Week

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 17, 2014) –Graduate student Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine), freshman Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) and classmate Patryk Backiel (Fairhaven, Mass.) each collected Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s indoor track weekly awards this week as announced by the league office on Sunday evening.

Kibler earns his fifth weekly honor of the season after being selected MASCAC men’s indoor track Co-Athlete of the Week. Chris set a new MASCAC/New England Alliance record in the 5000 meter with a time of 15:46.55 in placing first overall, while claiming top MASCAC honors in the mile (4:29.59) and second within the MASCAC in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:38.17 for the Falcons at the 2014 MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

Brian notches his first weekly accolade of the 2013-14 campaign after being named MASCAC men’s indoor track Co-Rookie of the Week. The first year Falcon captured MASCAC top honors in the 3000 meter with time of 8:59.81, while placing third (MASCAC) in the 5000m with a time of 16:02.29 for Fitchburg State at the 2014 MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.

In the field, Backiel also collects his first weekly honor of the season after being tabbed MASCAC men’s indoor track Co-Rookie of the Week. Patryk earned top honors in the pole vault with a vault of 4.45 meters for the Falcons at the 2014 MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships hosted by the USM.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams return to action this weekend as they compete at the 2014 DIII New England Championships hosted by Springfield College, starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
