Fitchburg State Captures Team Title at the Reggie Poyau Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's indoor track and field team captured the team title at the 2016 Reggis Poyau Memorial Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons garnered 144 points, outpacing the host Judges, who placed second with 111 points in the five-team field.

Sophomore Jake Hastings finished second in mile at 4:24.98 and seventh in 800m at 2:06.32. Both were MASCAC qualifying times.

Senior Akhiel Willis posted the top time in the 55 meter at 6.89, with classmate Eric Custadio finishing third (6.92), freshman John Carroll, Jr. finishing fifth (7.13), and senior Mattia Sicuro finishing sixth (7.28).

In the 200m, junior Chauncey Beatty ran third in 24.63, while freshman Cam Stalters finished in 25.15. Rookie Austin Landress led the Green and Gold in the 400m with a time of 55.81. Beatty was Fitchburg State's top performer in the 600m, finishing second with a time of 1:26.86. Junior Brandon Hannon was fifth in the same event at 1:32.19.

Senior Richard Ethier IV paced the Falcons with a fifth-place finish in the 800m (2:04.65). Ethier, along with junior Matt Cuomo (2:05.30) and Hastings (2:06.32) all posted MASCAC qualifying times. Freshman Anthony Darrigo finished in sixth place behind Hastings in the mile with a MASCAC qualifying time of 4:49.41.

In the 3000m, junior Brian Amaral was second (9:00.31) and Darrigo was seventh (9:26.04), both MASCAC qualifying times. Freshman Joe Darrigo was the top finisher in the 5000m at 16:22.93, followed in second place by senior Tim Allen at 17:14.84.
In the field events, sophomore Joe Bernadini recorded a MASCAC qualifying and personal best distance of 12.00 meters in the shot put. Freshman Brendon Courtney was second (11.35) while senior Dan Rymer was fifth (10.56). In the weight throw, Rymer was second with a distance of 10.69 meters. He was followed by Courtney in third (10.37), Bernadini in fourth (10.35) and junior Andrew St. Germain in sixth (8.03).

The Fitchburg State men's track and field team will be back in action on Sunday, January 24th, competing in the G.B.T.C. Invitational hosted by Harvard University.
