Fitchburg State Opens At UMass Boston Open Invite

Sattiewhite places second in high jump with an Open NE qualifying mark of 2.00m 

Roxbury, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's indoor track and field team competed opened its 2017-18 campaign this afternoon at the sixth annual UMass Boston Open Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track & Field Center.

Senior Ben Sattiewhite (Salem, Mass.) led the way for the Green and Gold, placing second overall in the high jump with a MASCAC, DIII NE, ECAC and Open New England qualifying mark of 2.00m, while junior Cameron Stalters (Norton, Mass.) notched DIII NE qualifying time of 8.61 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles with a third place effort to go along with a 13th place finish in the pole vault with a MASCAC qualifying mark of 3.40 meters.

Senior Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) was also solid for the Falcons, turning in a DIII New England qualifying time of 15:25.12 in the 5000 meter, while classmate Jake Hastings (Phillipston, Mass.) added a MASCAC qualifying time of 15:58.33 with a ninth place finish in the 5000 meter as well.

Newcomer Brandon Amello (Rowley, Mass.) notched a pair of post-season qualifying times in the 200m (23.62) and the 400m (51.80), while in the mile, freshmen Anthony Ortwein (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Joe Weston (Middleton, Mass.) qualified for MASCAC's with times of 4:57.26 and 4:58.33 respectively.

On the track, junior Austin Landress (Winchendon, Mass.) posted a post-season qualifying time of 1:09.90 with a sixth place finish in the 500 meter, while in the 3000 meter, Weston (10:02.37), newcomer Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, Mass.) (10:15.37) and Ortwein (10:20.09) added post-season qualifying times, placing 21st, 26th and 27th overall.

Junior Brendan Courtney (North Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Joseph Bernardini (Lowell, Mass.) posted MASCAC qualifying marks of 11.94m and 10.95m in the weight throw, while sophomore Kyle Nelson (Wilmington, Mass.) and Bernardini added post-season qualifying marks of 12.92 meters and 11.92 meters in the shot put, placing 15th and 22nd overall to round out the top Fitchburg State effort on the afternoon.

The Fitchburg State men's track and field team will be back in action next Saturday at it travels to Plymouth State University for a meet starting at 10:00 A.M.
