Fitchburg State Excels At Wesleyan And Open NE’s

Hastings places first overall in 1000 meter with time of 2:38.05

Middletown, Conn. – The Fitchburg State men's indoor track and field team returned to action this afternoon, competing at the 2018 Wesleyan Indoor Invitational, while select members also competed at the 2018 Open New England Championships.

At Wesleyan, freshman Christian McWhinnie-Armstead (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Falcons, placing third overall in the high jump with a DIII New England qualifying mark of 1.88 meters, while in the 60 meter dash, newcomers Brandon Amello (Rowley, Mass.) (7.22) and Asante Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.) (7.39) qualified for MASCAC's after finishing third and ninth respectively.

Amello was also solid in the 200 meter, turning in a post-season qualifying time of 23.71 seconds with a third place effort, while junior Austin Landress (Winchendon, Mass.) finished seventh overall in the 600 meter with a MASCAC qualifying time of 1:26.73

In the 1000 meter, senior Jake Hastings (Phillipston, Mass.) (1st) and classmate Mark Tonelli (Ayer, Mass.) (15th) posted post-season qualifying times of 2:38.05 and 2:51.28, while junior Stephen McCall (Brockton, Mass.) placed 12th in the mile with a MASCAC qualifying time of 4:50.95.

Freshman Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H.) notched a MASCAC qualifying time of 16:26.25 in the 5000 meter with an eighth place effort, while junior Anthony Darrigo (Tewksbury, Mass.) added a tenth place finish in the 3000 meter with a post-season qualifying time of 9:18.51.

In the field, senior Joseph Bernardini (Lowell, Mass.) placed 16th in the shot put (11.74m) and 18th in the weight throw (11.28m) to qualify for MASCAC's in both events, while freshman Eric Desgroseilliers (Fitchburg, Mass.) added a pair of post-season qualifying tosses in the shot put (10.16m) and the weight throw (8.53m).

Newcomer Keenan Doyle (Lancaster, Mass.) posted a MASCAC qualifying vault of 3.65 meter with a 15th place finish in the pole vault, while classmate Grant Mckinlay (Sutton, Mass.) registered a post-season qualifying mark of 526 meters in the long jump. Freshman Andrew Hill (Templeton, Mass.) rounded out the top Falcons efforts at Wesleyan, placing 18th overall in the 800 meter with a post-season qualifying time of 2:24.14.

At the 2018 Open New England Championships, senior Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) turned in a DIII New England qualifying time of 8:41.14 in the 3000 meter, while classmate Ben Sattiewhite (Salem, Mass.) posted a DIII NE mark of 1.99 meter in the high jump after finishing tenth overall. Junior Cameron Stalters (Norton, Mass.) closed out the top performances for the Green and Gold on the day after registering a DIII New England qualifying time of 8.71 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles.

The Fitchburg State men's track and field team returns to action next weekend as it completes in the 2018 MASCAC/Alliance Indoor Track Championships, hosted by Rhode Island College on Saturday, February 10th, starting at 10 A.M.
