Falcons Soar At USATF New England Championships

Bernadeau places first overall in the shot put to qualify for DIII NE Championships

Cambridge, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's indoor track & field team competed at the 2019-20 USATF New England Championships on Sunday afternoon, hosted by Harvard University at the Gordon Indoor Track.

How It Happened

Freshman Beau Bernadeau (North Andover, Mass.) paced the Falcons, placing first overall in the shot put with a DIII New England qualifying toss of 13.98 meters, while junior Christian McWhinnie-Armstead (Lowell, Mass.) added a DIII NE qualifying mark of 1.93 meters in the high jump after finishing second in the event.

Newcomers Adam Digman (Winchendon, Mass.) (6th) and Zion Barber-Amado (8th) were also solid for the Green and Gold, qualifying for the DIII New England Championships in the 60 meter hurdles with times of 8.69 seconds and 8.94 seconds, while classmate Eric Shimiyimana (Worcester, Mass.) added a fifth place effort in the triple jump with a DIII NE qualifying mark of 13.15 meters.

In the 200 meter, freshman Chris Morales (Lynn, Mass.) (12th), Barber-Amado (17th), newcomer Nathaniel Felix (Worcester, Mass.) (19th) and Joshua Ilori turned in times of 23.05, 23.73, 23.81 and 24.41, while freshman Matthew Catarius (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished 19th in the 3000 meter with a personal best time of 9:53.38.

Newcomer Samuel Flint (Methuen, Mass.) posted a strong time of 16:30.02 in the 5000 meter after finishing 19th overall, while in the 400 meter, Morales (13th) and Felix registered times of 53.09 seconds and 54.82 seconds.

In the 60 meter dash, junior Asante Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.) finished sixth with a time of 7.19 seconds, while sophomores Trevor Fields (Shirley, Mass.) and Nicholas Sachetta (Billerica, Mass.) registered times of 2:00.82 and 2:03.30 in the 800 meter.

In the field, freshman Benjamin Sacramone (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Brandon Patanao (Marlborough, Mass.) (14th) notched jumps of 1.78 meters and 1.73 meters in the high jump, while in the long jump, Shimiyimana and newcomer Edgard Dosantos placed 12th and 14th respectively with marks of 5.89 meters and 5.81 meters.

In the shot put, Digman (11.59m) and freshman Joseph Asare (Brockton, Mass.) (11.02m) finished 11th and 15th, while newcomer Shaki Auston (Springfield, Mass.) posted a tenth place time of 9.22 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles to round out the top Falcon efforts on the day.

"All in all, it was a good day and a solid warm up for the DIII New England Championship Meet next weekend." Said Fitchburg State men's track and field head coach Jim Jellison.
